Anakin Skywalker Family Tree: The Bloodline of the Chosen One

In a galaxy far, far away, few characters shaped the Star Wars universe more than Anakin Skywalker.

Skywalker is one of the most recognizable surnames in movie history. Even people who have never watched a Star Wars film are familiar with the name. The Skywalker family stood at the center of the saga throughout Episodes I–IX, a story arc famously known as the Skywalker Saga. Gifted with an extraordinary connection to the Force, generations of Skywalkers influenced some of the galaxy’s most defining moments.

As Luke Skywalker famously said, “The Force is strong in my family.”

From the rise and fall of the Galactic Empire to the restoration of hope in the galaxy, the Skywalkers played pivotal roles across multiple generations. Their legacy, however, extends far beyond Disney’s official canon.

Shmi Skywalker

Anakin Skywalker’s family tree was founded by a kind slave woman named Shmi Skywalker, who grew up on Tatooine, raising Anakin. Being slaved, she showed her son how to be kind, empathetic, and selfless. She continued her influence on Anakin all of his life, and future generations as well. Shmi didn't fight in galactic battles or use a lightsaber, but she is the progenitor of one of the most influential families in the Star Wars universe.

Anakin Skywalker

Anakin Skywalker was the keystone of the family tree and the most historic member of the family. His character was first introduced in The Phantom Menace, and it was believed that he was the Chosen One, the one meant to restore balance to the Force. Anakin Skywalker’s journey is the heart of Star Wars, from his humble beginnings as a Padawan to his terrifying rise as Darth Vader.

He fell in love with Padme Amidala, despite Jedi rules against attachment. But his fear of losing his loved ones around him led him on a tragic path. He later became Darth Vader, the feared Sith Lord who helped destroy the Jedi Order and played a key role in the rise of the Galactic Empire. He redeemed himself decades later when he came to the aid of Luke Skywalker and obliterated Emperor Palpatine. All the major branches of the family stemmed from Anakin's decisions and influence.

Anakin’s choices shaped everything in the Star Wars universe, and his descendants carried his legacy. His bloodline continued to influence events long after his death.

Padme Amidala

Padme Amidala became an essential part of the Skywalker story through her marriage to Anakin. As Queen and later Senator of Naboo, she dedicated herself to peace and diplomacy during one of the galaxy's most turbulent periods. More importantly, she became the mother of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa.

Even after her death, Padme's influence lived on through her children. Her compassion, determination, and belief in doing what was right became defining traits of future generations. In many ways, she provided the moral foundation of the Skywalker family.

Luke Skywalker

Luke Skywalker carried the Skywalker legacy into a new era. Raised on Tatooine, he began as a simple farm boy before discovering his connection to the Force. His refusal to give up on his father ultimately redeemed Anakin Skywalker and ended the reign of the Sith.

In Canon, Luke became a legendary Jedi Master whose teachings inspired future generations. In Legends, his role expanded even further. He rebuilt the Jedi Order, trained hundreds of Jedi, and established a lasting Skywalker branch through his son, Ben Skywalker. For many fans, Luke’s character emerged as a hope, compassion, and perseverance.

Leia Organa

Leia Organa inherited both the strength of her mother, Padme, and the determination of his father, Anakin. Raised by Bail and Breha Organa on Alderaan, she became a fearless leader in the Rebel Alliance and later the Resistance.

Unlike Luke, Leia's legacy extended primarily through her descendants. Her marriage to Han Solo united two iconic Star Wars heroes and created the Solo branch of the family. Whether leading military campaigns or standing against tyranny, Leia consistently demonstrated the courage that defined the Skywalker bloodline.

Han Solo

Han Solo entered the story as a smuggler but became one of the Rebellion's greatest heroes. Through his marriage to Leia, he became part of the Skywalker family and helped establish one of its most important branches.

Han's independent spirit balanced the family's strong connection to the Force. His children inherited not only Skywalker power but also Solo determination and resilience. As a result, Han's influence remained visible throughout both Canon and Legends.

Ben Solo (Canon)

Ben Solo represented the final biological descendant of Anakin Skywalker in Canon. As the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, he inherited tremendous Force potential but struggled with the weight of family expectations wielding his iconic red lightsaber as Kylo Ren

After falling to the dark side and becoming Kylo Ren, Ben followed a path that closely mirrored his grandfather's journey. However, his story ended differently. Through redemption and sacrifice, he returned to the light and helped defeat Palpatine. Although the bloodline ended with him, his actions ensured that the Skywalker legacy endured.

Jacen Solo (Legends)

Jacen Solo, one of Han and Leia's twin children in Legends, began as an idealistic Jedi seeking deeper knowledge of the Force. Over time, his desire to protect the galaxy led him toward increasingly dangerous decisions.

Eventually becoming Darth Caedus, Jacen echoed Anakin's fall to the dark side. His transformation became one of the most dramatic storylines in the Expanded Universe and permanently changed the Solo family's history.

Jaina Solo (Legends)

Jaina Solo emerged as one of the greatest Jedi of her generation. A gifted pilot, skilled warrior, and respected Jedi Knight, she earned the title "Sword of the Jedi."

When Jacen embraced the dark side, Jaina accepted the responsibility of stopping him. Her victory preserved the future of the Jedi Order and demonstrated the resilience of the Skywalker legacy. Many fans consider her one of the strongest descendants of Anakin Skywalker.

Anakin Solo (Legends)

Leia named his son after his father, Anakin Solo, who possessed remarkable Force abilities and tremendous potential. During the Yuuzhan Vong War, he repeatedly demonstrated bravery and leadership far beyond his years.

Although his life ended tragically, his sacrifice inspired countless allies and shaped the futures of both Jacen and Jaina. Many readers viewed him as one of the most promising young heroes in Legends.

Mara Jade Skywalker (Legends)

With the addition of Mara Jade, a new dimension was introduced in the Skywalker family tree. She was trained to be an assassin for Emperor Palpatine and was later one of the most respected Jedi Masters.

In Legends, it was her marriage to Luke Skywalker that brought the Skywalker bloodline to the main table. Her relationship created the direct continuation of the Skywalker bloodline in the main table. Mara was a strong-willed, intelligent, and loyal character, making her one of the Expanded Universe's most beloved characters.

Cade Skywalker (Legends)

More than a century after the original trilogy, Cade Skywalker became the most distant known descendant of Anakin Skywalker. Unlike many of his ancestors, Cade resisted the responsibilities associated with the Skywalker name.

His story focused on personal struggle, redemption, and self-discovery. Despite his flaws, Cade ultimately proved that the family's legacy remained alive generations after Anakin's time. Mara Jade brought an entirely new dimension to the family tree. Originally trained as Emperor Palpatine's assassin, she eventually abandoned the dark side and became a respected Jedi Master.

Her marriage to Luke Skywalker created the direct continuation of the Skywalker bloodline in Legends. Strong-willed, intelligent, and fiercely loyal, Mara became one of the Expanded Universe's most beloved characters.

Ben Skywalker (Legends)

Ben Skywalker carried the direct Skywalker name into the next generation. As the son of Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade, he inherited enormous expectations but gradually forged his own identity.

His adventures as a Jedi Knight helped preserve the Order and continued the family's tradition of service to the galaxy. Ben represented the future that Luke has built so far.

Rey Skywalker

Rey is the heroine of the sequel trilogy. She's a Force-sensitive human from a desert planet who gets involved with galactic affairs. She's the granddaughter of Darth Sidious, though her lineage is a mystery for most of the series. She's exceptionally strong with the Force, frightening even Luke with her immense power. Luke trained her in the ways of the Force, helping her to become the first Jedi of a new generation.

In The Rise of Skywalker, after finally ridding the galaxy of Darth Sidious, Rey denounces her bloodline and takes Skywalker as her new surname. She has rejected the Palpatine lineage and has chosen an identity of her own, one that means something to her.

While the Skywalker bloodline might be over, the idea of them lives on. Rey is now the face of the Skywalker family and will be the one who continues the Skywalker Legacy

The Legacy of the Chosen One

Anakin Skywalker's family experienced triumph, tragedy, redemption, and sacrifice across multiple generations. Some descendants became Jedi heroes, while others repeated the mistakes that once led Anakin to the dark side. Yet every generation contributed something unique to the bloodline of the Chosen One.

For Star Wars fans, whether in Canon or Legends, the Skywalker bloodline remained one of the most influential dynasties in the galaxy. Their choices shaped governments, ended wars, rebuilt the Jedi Order, and inspired countless heroes.
