The Crimson Fury: Darth Maul's Lightsaber Legacy

Darth Maul is an easily recognizable Star Wars character because of his unforgettable face and fierce personality. Many fans have found his red and black tattooed face to be unnerving. That is to say, something, especially when his soulless black eyes gleam against his crimson red double bladed lightsaber. Not just that he is also an apprentice to Darth Sidious sharing an unwavering loyalty.

Considering the evil and cunning personality of Darth Vader, there are certain remarkable things about him that cannot be unseen. He was a fierce warrior who had a good command over several lightsaber combat forms.

Darth Vader first made his appearance with his mighty lightsaber in ‘Star Wars: The Phantom Menace’. Here he reflected his strong dislike for the right side of the force.

Moreover, Darth Maul’s agile and devious character is well played by the actor Ray Park in Phantom Menace. He brought life to the character and portrayed him as a passionate Star Wars villain.

Later, the character Darth Maul is voiced by actors Peter Serafinowicz and Sam Witwer in ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ and ‘Star Wars Rebels’.

Maul Saber

Darth Maul lightsaber is also referred to as a Maul Saber or a Sith Saber. He is one of the distinguishable Star Wars characters who proved his compassion for the evil side through his combat skills. His eccentric red double bladed lightsaber is a special sight in the movies.

The silver cylindrical gleaming hilt of Maul Saber extends into a single line and has two red kyber crystal blades protruding opposite each other. The alloy hilt is 49.5 centimeters long and has black markings on it. The long hilt is actually two small hilts forged together with red buttons. So when required he used a single blade and conveniently switched to a dual blade, outsmarting his offenders.

Because of this amazing lightsaber innovation, Darth Maul had a special advantage. He would use the extra lightsaber blade as a surprise element. Like he did with Siolo Ur Manka, a powerful Jedi.

Along with the shadow collective double bladed hilt and the hilt stand. Together with all the parts the legacy Maul lightsaber weighs 7 pounds. However, the lightsaber itself, with the blade, is lightweight at 2 pounds.

Seeing this Maul’s intelligence is no less applaudable. He created the weapon himself. Inspired by the plans within Sith Holocorn of his master, Darth Sidious. Because of such a creative design, he has impressed a vast number of fans.

Meaning behind the Color

Not only the color but the character holding the lightsaber represents the same thing. The crimson red of Maul Saber indicates his deep hatred and rage against the Force.

Moreover, the appearance of the red color is not coincidental. As it would appear repeatedly. Even when Darth Maul surrendered and lost his lightsaber. The color appeared as soon as he built his lightsaber again.

Moving on, the red color is deeply connected with Darth Maul’s feelings and state of mind. He was the opposite of Jedi beliefs and wanted to eliminate them. As his thirst for revenge against the Jedi was unquenched. It only grew as he lost to Obi Wan Kenobi.

Maul Saber Fighting Style

Darth Maul excelled at all combat forms like his master. However, to name a few. He was quite good at Jar’Kai. A combat form that teaches you the principles of using a double bladed lightsaber.

Other than that due to his Sith and aggressive nature. Darth Maul is known to be quite efficient at Form VII also known as Juyo. This form not only teaches you defense but also your body movement to deliver a powerful offense.

Maul Saber Journey

Darth Maul's lightsaber seemed like it had an equal penchant for the character. The durable red lightsaber always found its way back to its holder.

At his first screen appearance, Darth Maul, a Dathomirian Zabrak, is seen to be holding his lightsaber. Darth Maul was initially trained by his master, Darth Sidious. Under his guidance, he mastered his combat skills and formed his first double bladed red lightsaber. With the formation of this weapon, Darth Maul sealed his alliance with the dark side of the Force.

Darth Sidious Order

When Darth Sidious gave Darth Maul the command to assault the Jedi, Obi Wan Kenobi, and Qui Gon Jinn. That put their friendship to the test. He showcased an epic duel against Qui Gon Jinn on planet Tatooine in 32BBY. However, Jinn was able to escape on the pilot ship. Due to this defeat, Darth Maul's agitation and rage grew.

In Fact, in another chance during the Battle of Naboo, he was able to get an upper hand with Jinn. At that time, Obi Wan Kenobi was accompanying his Master Qui Gon Jinn. Though, Darth Maul was able to strike Jinn with his lightsaber. Obi Wan retaliated in defense of his master. In this fight, Maul lost one blade of the lightsaber. However, as the fight grew, Maul also lost the other half of the lightsaber. Later, he was fatally injured and was presumed dead.

Mauls Retaliation (The Clone Wars)

The journey is about to begin. Darth Maul was not in fact dead. He came back with a cybernetic lower body and fierce as ever. His brother, Savage Opress, saved Darth Maul. He was nursed back to health with the help of his brother, who also returned his lost lightsaber to him. It was the time when Darth Maul went rogue with his lightsaber. First, he battled with Kenobi and successfully defeated him.

Then he and his brother fought Asajj Ventress. He then unleashed his wrath in the outer realms. Where Jedi warriors like Finn Ertay, Nicto, and several droids fell victim to his madness. Expectantly, Maul killed his brother as well. To prove and flex his dominance over him.

Vizla’s Betrayal

Darth Maul was quickly rising to power and bringing warriors into his alliance. He formed an organization namely Shadow Collective.

During this time Darth met Vizla who promised to take care of his lightsaber while Maul recovered from the fight with his brother. However, Vizla deceived Darth Maul and imprisoned him. Darth Maul overcome with rage challenged Vizla to a duel. Where he used Vizla’s lightsaber, dark saber, to kill him.

Darth Sidious Duel

Darth Sidious lightsaber remained a constant companion. Now he had Vizla’s Dark saber with him as well. He used the lightsabers in a duel against his master, Darth Sidious. However, he was defeated, and both weapons were taken from him. His own lightsaber was damaged in the process.

Maul later recovered the lightsaber and created a new blade, replacing the damaged end. This was the second time he had lost his lightsaber and repaired it with a newer blade. Yet, the lightsaber was forever lost in a strong and heady duel against Ashoka Tano. She did not spare the lightsaber the mercy she did with Darth Maul.

Darth Maul Decline

In ‘Star Wars Rebels’ Darth Maul's lightsaber journey comes to an end. Here he was overcome by range for his former master and all the betrayals he had faced in the past. Darth Maul made two significant appearances with his lightsaber. Once he tried to compel Ezra Bridger, a follower of the light side of the Force, to join him. However, Ezra refused him and remained loyal.

Secondly, in his final fight with Obi Wan Kenobi. Also, in the last confrontation, Darth Maul was badly defeated, and his lightsaber was lost forever.

New Maul Saber Design?

After the Clone Wars, Darth Maul built a new lightsaber because his previous was damaged and lost.

The design of the second lightsaber is quite different from his first lightsaber. It has a metal hilt that resembles the Inquisitor’s lightsabers. Mainly because the hilt was constructed with metal scarps acquired from them.

Along with a cylindrical hilt like the previous lightsaber. Darth Maul further designed a hooked grip guard on the outer emitter. As expected, this lightsaber yielded two crimson red blades as well. Additionally, this second lightsaber is seen accompanying him through his control of the Crimson Dawn criminal organization.

Did you know?

Darth Maul was as clever as he was vengeful. He was known for catching his opponents off guard. From whipping out a new blade to camouflaging the blade. He did it all.

Darth Maul used to attach a piece of wood to the hilt of his lightsaber. He then pretended to use it as a walking stick, supporting his feeble frame. Successfully hid his ace card from his enemies.

Does Disney have Darth Maul Lightsaber?
